It's not everyday we get to taste an Ethiopian coffee from a single producer. Here is the work of Basha Bekele - a clean anaerobic natural coffee that carries layers of acidity.
Basha Bekele is an independent specialty coffee producer based in Bensa, Sidama, one of Ethiopia’s highest-quality coffee-growing areas. Raised in a coffee-farming family, Basha has built his operation around both his own farms, totaling around 12 hectares, and cherries sourced from more than 120 nearby smallholder producers. Sitting at elevations of 2,200–2,300 masl, his coffees benefit from slow cherry maturation, contributing to their clarity and intensity in the cup. With Ethiopia’s evolving export system, Basha holds his own export license, giving him greater control over traceability, quality management, and farmer payments, including premiums and second payments to reward top-quality deliveries.
Basha primarily works with Ethiopian heirloom varieties, especially 74158 (Walega type), and focuses on natural processing, alongside smaller experimental lots such as anaerobic naturals. His careful cherry selection, high-altitude drying, and strict lot separation consistently produce expressive, fruit-forward coffees.
